Exactly one year ago today, on the morning of January 6th, 2021, newspaper readers on Capitol Hill would have opened the pages of Roll Call to see this cartoon. It was no great feat of imagination for me to depict the depraved soon-to-be Former Guy as Gollum. What I failed to imagine was how to draw the all the monstrous little toadies – Mark Meadows, Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, Jim Jordan, Mo Brooks, Peter Navarro, Rudy Giuliani and Steve Bannon (to name a few) – who have supported the Big Lie and each one of the wretched 45th president's many desperate ploys to hold on to power. What would JRR Tolkien have done with such a contemptible lot?
